Panther was awarded a contract for the remediation of a former rail siding and railroad bridge in the heart of downtown Washington, DC. The former railroad bridge was being incorporated into the construction of a new luxury hotel complex and was planned to be the walkway from the parking lot to the hotel. Panther’s scope of work involved the excavation and removal of 50 tons of impacted soils from underneath the bridge and complete removal of all remnants of the former rail line including the rails, ties, switch gear and 150 tons of lead and petroleum impacted ballast and soils. Following completion of excavation and backfill from under the bridge, a crane was used to place the excavation equipment up onto the bridge. All materials were loaded off of the bridge into waiting transport vehicles staged under the bridge. The rails were cut into sections and lifted off the bridge with a crane as well as bundles of ties. Impacted soils, ballast and debris was loaded into dump trucks staged under the bridge using a small excavator. Trucks and materials were staged in a parking lot around the corner and brought to the loading zone one at a time.
Challenges included working in a very confined location during the overnight hours in the cold. Night work was necessary in order to not contribute to the significant traffic problems of the very congested downtown location as the roadway under the bridge was an onramp to one of the main highways around downtown DC. The cold and darkness added to the difficulty of operating equipment on the bridge and loading materials into transport vehicles on the roadway below. |
