Panther constructed a fully automated leachate collection, monitoring and control system capable of handling flow rates of over up to 120 gpm at a facility in Mt. Holly, NJ. Panther performed all phases of construction activities including lay-out, equipment procurement, excavation, above and below grade mechanical piping, pump installation, electrical, controls and instrumentation, site restoration, system start-up and programming and operator training. The system construction included installation of over 3,000 linear feet of underground HDPE leachate force main, retrofit of nine existing leachate collection sumps as eight simplex and one duplex lift stations, installation of approximately 2 miles of underground power and control conduit, as well as installation of a fully automated leachate surge, monitoring and control station. The monitoring and control station is fully automated and includes data logging and telemetry equipment allowing for significantly reduced operator intervention. The system automatically modulates the effluent flow rate, limits the gallons pumped per day (GPD) to the sewer authority and data logs the actual GPD of effluent discharged. The new system has successfully reduced costs at this site by over $350,000/year. The former method employed for leachate collection involved manual removal of leachate from numerous leachate collection sumps utilizing vacuum tanker trucks at a frequency of three times per week.
