Panther’s team was contracted to design and implement an in-situ biological treatment system for a low lying area of an active industrial facility that was formerly known as one of the Brooklyn sites. Based on its former use, an added safety issue involved low-level radiation from previous operations at the site. High level RAD on site was handled by the Corp of Engineers and involved excavation and off-site disposal. Due to the low level radiation present, the client required an innovative solution to their problem that could be done on-site. A previous ROD issued by USEPA for the site involved a 5,000,000 SVE system be installed. USEPA oversaw the operation and based on extremely successful reductions in site contaminants following application, reversed the ROD for the site. Specific operations conducted at the site involved the inoculation and on-site generation of bacteria that was mixed into the top 8 feet of soils at the site. Over 50,000 gallons of “bug” were applied and was first bred using a local sewer plant to develop base colonies for the site. Proprietary nutrients were also mixed in that were designed to allow a slow release over time and feed the colony counts. Massive reductions in BTEX and many chlorinated compounds were observed after the 8 week project implementation.
