As a pre-selected remediation contractor for a confidential utility client, Panther successfully completed remedial activities at a former MGP facility in Mt. Holly, New Jersey. The client placed this project on a fast track since adjacent property owners desired that the project be completed as quickly as possible. Challenges included the removal and disposal of 600 tons of impacted soils from a poorly accessible area located within the floodplain of the Rancocas River and behind previously installed vinyl sheeting. Panther was tasked with properly characterizing the MGP-impacted soils prior to off-site shipment. Panther installed a ground water treatment system and conducted a 3-day – 24-hour treatment event to restore ground water quality in a shallow aquifer. Prior to intrusive activities Panther conducted a public utility mark out and evaluated drawings to locate private site utilities. Mobilization and site preparation activities included the installation of soil and erosion control measures and a safety fence. Panther’s crew utilized temporary shoring systems, a track-mounted excavator, mini-excavator, loader and compaction equipment and other support equipment to remove impacted soils at specified locations and to prescribed depths. To avoid slope failure and prevent water from the Rancocas River from infiltrating into the open excavation behind the older vinyl sheeting, Panther installed additional support. During excavation it became necessary to protect private site-specific utilities that had not been identified on site drawings. Site restoration activities included installation of an asphalt cap and wetlands re-vegetation.
